Policy on the Use of AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
The policy of the Journal for Veterinary Medicine, Biotechnology and Biosafety regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is based on statements by COPE, WAME, and JAMA Network, recommendations of the ICMJE, requirements of the European AI Act, the Concept for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Ukraine, and the Law of Ukraine «On Academic Integrity».
These rules aim to ensure transparency and enhance the quality of publications. The Editorial Board monitors the development of AI technologies and improves these rules in accordance with international standards.
For Authors
If authors use generative AI in the writing process, these technologies should be used only to improve readability and correct grammatical errors. The application of AI must be conducted under human supervision. Authors bear ultimate responsibility for the content of the work.
- Disclosure of Information: Authors must disclose cases of AI use in their manuscripts. A statement on the use of these technologies supports transparency and trust.
- Authorship: AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author. Authorship implies responsibilities that can only be fulfilled by humans.
- Originality: Authors are responsible for ensuring that the work is original and does not infringe on the rights of third parties.
Use of AI in Figures, Images, and Illustrations
We do not permit the use of generative AI to create or modify images in manuscripts (enhancing, removing, or adding elements). Adjusting brightness or contrast is acceptable if it does not distort the original information.
Exception: When the use of AI is part of the research design (e.g., in biomedical imaging). In such cases, the use must be described in detail in the text (model name, version, manufacturer).
For Reviewers
A manuscript must be treated as a confidential document. Reviewers must not upload the manuscript or any parts of it into generative AI tools, as this violates confidentiality and the proprietary rights of the authors.
- This requirement also applies to the reviewer's report: it is forbidden to upload a review into AI even for grammar correction.
- Peer review involves critical thinking and original evaluation, which only a human can provide.
For Editors
Editors are obliged to maintain confidentiality and must not upload manuscripts or correspondence about them into AI systems. Managing editorial evaluation and decision-making is the sole responsibility of humans.
If an editor suspects that an author or reviewer has violated the Artificial Intelligence Policy, they must notify the Editorial Board for further investigation.
